Whether you’re a first-timer or new to Wax Monkey, there are often questions about our beauty treatments. The Wax Monkey team can answer all of your questions and provide pre and post care tips when you’re in the salon, but if you’re looking for a quick tip or are a little shy to ask face to face, here is all you need to know about waxing, tanning, tinting and eyelash extensions.
Pre-Wax Care
Waxing prep tips
- Hair should be at least 1 to 2 cm long – about the length of a grain of rice.
- Don’t apply creams, lotions or gels to the area being waxed the day of your appointment.
- Wear comfy undies – you don’t want super tight clothing irritating your freshly waxed sweet spot.
- Don’t sunbathe 24 hours before or after your treatment.
Post-Wax Care
Look after your skin
- Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours after your wax.
- No swimming in a pool, hot tubs or sauna for 24 hours after waxing.
- Keep hair follicles clean by showering immediately after exercise.
- Don’t use any products on the waxed area until the following day.
- Moisturize the area daily with a natural body lotion such as Tea Tree or Aloe.
- If you’re prone to bumps or in-grown hair, use an in-grown roll-on treatment such as Ingrown Zone. Gently exfoliate every 3 days with a mitt and natural body wash such as Tea Tree, Aloe or Lavendar.
- Don’t sunbathe for 24 hours before or after your treatment. Tanning after your treatment can cause irritation and even burns.
Pre-eyelash treatment care
Eyelash prep

Pre-tanning care
Prepare your body
Prepping your skin can for a spray tan can make all the difference for a perfect result. With these tips and tricks, getting a spray tan or applying self tan products will help you keep your golden glow for longer:
- Exfoliate and moisturise 24 hours before you have a Wax Monkey spray tan or apply self-tan, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and problem dry areas.
- Wax or shave at least 48 hours prior to treatment. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if shave within the 48 hours.
- For the entire 24 hours before tanning avoid using bar soaps, high pH shower products, oil-based products or in-shower moisturisers. These products may act as a barrier against your skin and can prevent the fast acting tanning agents to develop.
- Before tanning, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Keep in mind that too much moisture causes tanning product to slide right off the skin. Don’t apply moisturising lotion except in light amounts on your knees and elbows — the areas where tanner generally absorbs too much. This helps stop these areas from getting too dark.
- Don’t apply moisturiser, perfume, deodorant or makeup on the day of application.
Post-tanning care
Extend your glow
- Wear dark loose clothing; tight clothing or underwear may cause marks. Wear loose-fitting shoes.
- When the developing time is up, shower quickly for 45 seconds with lukewarm water. The brown bronzers will wash away, while the fast tan actives continue to work and deepen the tan.
- DO NOT use hot water – it stops the development of tan actives during the development time. This is a common mistake people make, especially in the colder months.
- Use plain water; don’t use shower gels, scrubs, shampoos or loofah during the first 24 hours after your treatment.
- Once you shower, you can wear your favourite clothes, go out of the house and the bed sheets won’t stain. Your tan will develop into a natural tan without the hassle of fake tan staining and smell.
- Pat your skin dry. Do not rub or scrub your skin.
- Moisturise every day after tanning. Use a gradual tanner every few days so the tan is continually being topped up and your tan lasts longer.
- After day five, exfoliate with a soft body polish on a daily basis, to help your skin absorb more moisture and keep it looking and feeling fresh. This will also helps the tan fade naturally, rather than in patches.
General info
Waxing, tanning and eyelash treatments
Waxing
What is a Brazilian Wax?
A Brazilian wax removes all hair from the pubic region from the top to the labia and even between the bum cheeks.
What is a vajazzle?
Vajazzling involves adorning your “top-V” in swarovski rhinestones or a glitter design.
How long should my hair be?
Hair should be 1-2 cm, that’s about the length of a grain of rice. If it’s a forest down there you can trim it before you come in or we will trim it before your wax.
Does my hair change as a result of waxing?
When waxing is done right, hairs are removed down to their roots. The hair that grows back is usually finer and sparser, and over time the hair density declines in areas that are regularly treated with warm wax.
How long should my wax last?
That depends on the hair removal method you’ve been using until now. It can last up to a month. Ultimately, however, your rate of hair growth is the determining factor and this varies from person to person.
Does waxing hurt?
When waxing is done right, hairs are removed down to their roots. The hair that grows back is usually finer and sparser, and over time the hair density declines in areas that are regularly treated with warm wax.
Can waxing cause adverse skin reactions?
Right after waxing, small red dots can appear on treated skin areas. They usually disappear within a few hours, however. It’s a very normal reaction of the skin, as the hair is removed down to the roots, which briefly widens the pores and follicles. But the more often you get hair removed with warm wax, the finer and sparser it gets. That in turn makes the red dots smaller and the overall pore structure clears up. The skin keeps getting smoother and lovelier.
What causes ingrown hairs?
Excess accumulation of dead flakes of skin can plug a hair follicle. Then the growing hair can’t penetrate the outer dermal layer and instead curls back or grows sideways into the skin. The best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to regularly get a body peel (exfoliation) and/or scrub yourself with a Luffa bath sponge. Exfoliation removes dead flakes of skin, opens plugged pores and stimulates circulation. You should also avoid excess use of lipid-containing body creams and lotions.
Can pregnant women get waxed?
Absolutely. There are no practical problems at all. And when you’re pregnant, it’s especially important for you to feel good in and on your skin.
Should I shower right before my appointment?
It’s always nice to feel clean when you come in for an appointment, but we offer fresh wet wipes with every Brazilian wax so you don’t have to obsess over it.
How often should I wax?
Most wax worshipers wax every 3-6 weeks. We find that 4 weeks is the magic number. We offer a Brazilian annual service package – pay for 10 Brazilians up front and get two free. That’s one Brazilian a month at $42.
Should I get waxed the day before a big event?
If it’s your first time waxing we recommend booking your wax 2 or 3 days before a big event such as your wedding. Don’t worry, you will still be silky smooth for your big day!
Tanning
How does sunless tanning work?
Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, is the main building block of spray tanning products and bronzing lotions. Naturally derived from sugar cane, it creates colour when it comes in contact with the amino acids found in your skin’s surface cells.
Is tanning safe?
While tanners can cause allergies and minor irritation in sensitive skin types, side effects are rare. Compared to UV rays, which are linked to a host of adverse reactions that range from faster aging to skin cancer, sunless tanning is healthier and more effective.
Is spray tanning right for me?
For creating the best fake tan in one application, professional spray tanning can’t be beaten. Automated technology makes the application process a breeze, and you can mix and match spray tanning products for a custom colour that flatters your complexion.
Who shouldn’t spray tan?
If you suffer from respiratory problems, we recommend talking to your doctor.
Will my skin turn orange?
The general rule to follow for avoiding the dreaded orange tint is to only use high-end brands. We use Mine Tan solutions which are made with premium ingredients that fight against discolouration, so your golden glow will last longer.
Will spray tanning products ruin my clothes?
Staining can happen when your colour is still fresh so be sure to wear or bring along loose-fitting clothing, such as a baggy dress to wear after your spray.
How soon after tanning can I shower?
Some self tanning tips say six hours is enough, but we think overnight is ideal. Your spray tanning therapist will advise on the time required. While most lotions and spray tanning products start showing colour within a couple of hours, DHA solutions can take up to 16 hours to fully develop. When you do shower, avoid using harsh soaps and exfoliators.
How long does faux colour last?
After getting a perfect Wax Monkey spray tan, no doubt you’ll want to make it last for as long as possible. With little care, good tanners fade in about five days. To double that number, stock your beauty cabinet with moisturisers, tan enhancers and bronzers.
Eyelashes
Eyelash lift
What is a lash lift?
The lash lift procedure has revolutionised old, inadequate perming techniques. Using silicone pads instead of perm rods, this new technique can lift, straighten or curl, and lengthen your own natural lashes to create a brighter, fuller, wide-eyed look. No need for extensions and the associated aftercare, this will last you 6-8 weeks.
How do I need to prep for the treatment?
Please come in make up free. If you wear contacts, they must be removed.
Can a lash lift be used to complement other treatments?
Yes, a lash lift is enhanced when you use an eyelash growth product, or a semi-permanent mascara. While your lashes grow longer, our process controls straight or overly curly lashes by giving them a uniform lifted look.
Is a lash lift the same as an eyelash perm?
No. The lash lift is a new, improved procedure, overcoming the ‘over curled’ look of a lash perm. Whilst the chemical procedure is identical to a perm, the difference is in the results. By replacing the old-fashioned perm rollers which curled the lashes to the extent of the ‘dolly look’, the silicone pads used for this new procedure lift the lash from the root in either a straight or curled upwards fashion that produces length and a bright-eyed look.
Does the lash lift procedure hurt?
No. The procedure is totally painless. Your eyes will be closed for the entire treatment and although it may feel a little strange being unable to open your eyes, it offers you a chance to relax during the treatment.
Is the procedure safe?
Yes. Lashes are lifted onto our specially shaped lifting pads before products are applied.
Will the lash lift damage my natural lashes?
No. Your lash procedure will be performed with the utmost care and proper technique by our trained technicians. The product never touches the skin during the process. Redness around the eye may occur due to the product removal process (wiping the eyes with cotton rounds) but should disappear within a few minutes after the procedure.
How long does a lash lift take?
A lash lift takes approximately 40 minutes.
How long will a Lash Lift last?
A lash lift can last 6-8 weeks but can vary from person to person due to your lash growth cycle. There is no need for any maintenance appointments in between but you will need to have the process repeated every 6-8 weeks to lift the new hair growth. There are some situations that may cause the lift to drop/weaken prematurely such as swimming, use of harsh products or heat. If you find that your lift does not last the full 2 months, you can repeat the treatment after a minimum of 6 weeks of having the initial treatment, but not before.
I wear contact lenses, can I have this procedure?
Yes. However, we will ask you to remove them temporarily during the treatment.
Can I wear makeup after my lash lift?
Yes, but it is advised that you leave your lashes untouched for at least 24 hours after your treatment. You may find that there is no need for mascara anyway, but if you wish to make your lashes even fuller, a non-waterproof mascara is advised as the removal of waterproof mascaras can be harsh on the lashes and weaken the lift.
How do I clean my eyes?
Gently using mild products. Always wait 24 hours to clean/wet your eyes.
Can I use an eyelash curler?
No. There will be no need for an eyelash curler as this treatment gives a much better result than using a curler. Using one may weaken and damage your lashes.

Eyelash extension
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are lightweight, synthetic eyelashes that come in a wide variety of lengths, thicknesses, curl styles, colours and materials e.g. silk, polyester, faux mink and 100% Siberian mink fur – they are expertly bonded individually on a ‘lash by lash’ basis to your own natural lashes giving you longer, thicker, more luscious looking lashes. Eyelash extensions are perfect for special occasions, everyday wear or for people who want to forget about mascara. They are so soft and flexible you won’t even know you are wearing them!
Are eyelash extensions safe?
Yes, eyelash extension products are completely safe and will not damage your natural lashes when applied using the correct technique. Our eyelash extension technicias are profressionally trained and certified to ensure the best, natural looking lashes are achieved.
What do eyelash extensions look like when applied?
Eyelash extensions that have been applied properly will look and feel completely natural – they will be longer, curlier and definitely more full and luxurious than average natural lashes. In fact, they look so real that most people will think you were born with beautiful lashes. There are many designs and styles to suit you personally, to give you a unique look, whether it be natural or dramatic.
What does it feel like and how long does it take to apply eyelash extensions?
The entire procedure is very relaxing, taking between 1 – 2 hours to apply a complete set of eyelash extensions depending on the design. During this time, you will be lying on a comfortable beauty bed with your eyes closed – many people fall asleep and wake to find their eyelash extensions complete. Eyelash extension infill treatments take approximately 45mins to 1.5 hours.
How long will a set of eyelash extensions last?
Lashes have growth cycles at 4-6 weeks, where you can lose about 20% of your natural lashes, but don’t worry baby ones have already grown to replace them, thus why you have probably never noticed. Unfortunately, it is hard to determine which lash is ready to fall out naturally so it is unpredictable when applying the synthetic lashes. If you sleep on your stomach with your face squashed into the pillow or you favour sleeping on one side you may notice the lashes may not last as well. We recommend booking a refill every 2-3 weeks to keep the full maintained look.
Can I apply eye makeup and mascara to eyelash extensions?
Yes, normal use of eye makeup is fine, however, you shouldn’t need to use mascara on a daily basis. If you would like to use mascara at any time it is essential that you only use a water-based mascara (not water-proof or oil-based) and be aware that regular use of mascara may shorten the lifespan of your lash extensions. Care must also be taken when removing makeup, be sure not to use any products that contain oil or glycols, these weaken the adhesive bond and cause eyelash extensions to fall off prematurely.
Can I swim, shower, exercise or visit a spa while wearing eyelash extensions?
Absolutely, following the initial two-day period. Our adhesives are strong and waterproof and will withstand normal wear and tear. Providing the proper after-care instructions are followed, lash extensions will not stop you from enjoying your leisure activities. As provided in the after-care instructions, special care in the first 48 hours is very important to maximise the strength of the adhesive bond and allow it time to cure.
How do I prepare for my eyelash extensions treatment?
Precious lash application time can easily be used up by the need to clean eyes in preparation for your treatment. To avoid this please come to your appointment with clean, makeup-free eyes. Be prepared to relax with your eyes closed for 1-2 hours. Some clients like to listen to music via their smartphone. Please do not bring children to your appointment as you cannot watch them with your eyes closed.
How do I choose the look I want?
Your lash artist will go through the range of lengths and map it out for you. During the consultation, we will show you different options to match whatever look you are after. Alternatively, if you have a reference photo, please bring it to your consultation.
I have very sensitive eyes; can I wear eyelash extensions?
Yes. The lashes we use are of a high quality and we have adhesives suitable for sensitive eyes. Although uncommon, allergic reactions are possible—please call your Lash Artist if you have any concerns.
Can I have eyelash extensions if I don’t have many eyelashes?
Eyelash extensions can only be applied to natural eyelashes. If you have experienced eyelash loss for any reason, you must wait until your eyelashes have re-grown before having eyelash extensions applied. Your Lash Artist will be able to explain this more fully during your consultation. An excellent option to encourage the growth and healthy condition of your natural eyelashes is a Lash & Brow Conditioner which works by stimulating the hair follicle and results in longer, thicker, healthier lashes – all the more lashes to extend!
NOTE:
Eyelash extensions should not, and in many cases cannot be applied to clients who have alopecia, are undergoing chemotherapy, or those who suffer from Trichotillomania, unless the individual has received effective treatment and normal lash growth has resumed. You may need a medical certificate prior to application if you suffer from the above.
How do I remove eyelash extensions?
If for any reason you wish to have your eyelash extensions removed, please do not attempt to pull them off yourself—this can damage your natural lashes. Professional removal is quick and inexpensive and protects your natural lashes.
